Do the Metz have a Reyes of Hope for the Future?
Omen or Oh man? Jose's Threads Join Krod and Beltran in the Mets Clubhouse Reduced Rack |
This is going to be an odd off season. The Mets are firing staff, the brass is making noises about cutting payroll. And yet fans still hold out for a Reyes return. So I wanted to share this sad picture with you.
Talk about blowing the whole thing up and Sandy-fying the roster is still just talk. For instance, if the Mets believe that moving and painting the walls will matter, then it doesn't make sense to trade Wright this winter before seeing if the renovations ignite the slugging percentages. Or more likely, the Wilpons will have just added more empty, expensive seats to the empty expensive seats they already have. But I won't be shocked if a rebuilding project is the new reality. Let's get some pitching at least.

IMFM, the only bright spot on these bleak times as a Mets fan is having you back on here. Reading that the plan all along supposedly was to have Alderson just as a temporary stabilizer to be passing sooner than later the GM chair on to Depodesta also gives me more of a feeling that Alderson is quite dispassionate about the Mets. He wants to do a good job and pad his resume maybe or do a favor for Selig or whatever, but certainly doesn't bleed orange and blue. D-Pod, who seems quite tied to the San Diego area, doesn't strike me as someone who would stick around or think of the Mets as more than his toy either. Well, maybe the idea of GMing a NY team intrigues him, although it is probably his 2nd choice to the Dodgers (under better circumstances, of course). What I'm getting at is, I'm hoping that this long-term plan of Alderson works, but right now it is very tough watching sausage get made. I'm also not sure that Alderson really has a clue or that much really invested in this project. I'm sure I'm not alone in being cynical of the "five year plan" after things imploded with Omar. But maybe the real problem, as always is ownership. Instead of a 100 mil payroll, a 150 mil well spent would be better, but our owners don't seem to have the ducats, do they - or don't they? All the best, sir!

Don't you get the feeling that this Mets Hotstove is going to be peppered with "bulletins" like "Desi Relaford signs to a minor league contract"?

Hey Cver thanks for the comments. Omar's plan seemed to be to do the opposite of the plan as i remember it: shitty pitching and horrid defense. "Rebuilding" after 5 yrs of shit is hard to watch. Maybe I've been down so long it looks like up to me, but I give Alderson a few whacks to fix this. I hope he starts finding some pitching.
But I also think things have a good chance of getting blown up. My concern is when the top heavy Phils implode in a season or two, will the mets even be in the running to replace them what with the Br*ves and Nats and maybe even Fish getting so much better?
At least as they rebuild, we don't have Desi. Nor do we have to watch elderly gentlemen land large contracts to play key spots for the Mets. So that's something.

also, if any of the moneyballing brass do lose interest or leave early, my hope is that they leave a productive farm system behind.

I hear they are selling those Jose Reyes jerseys at Models for 25 bucks now. That's actually Wilpon's new scouting strategy. You come in and browse Model's in the jersey section and once you start showing interest in the Reyes jersey, they offer you a tryout.
